A shipper’s own container, commonly abbreviated as SOC, gives an exporter, importer, freight forwarder, or cargo owner direct control over the equipment used to transport goods. Instead of using a shipping line’s container, the shipper supplies the container and purchases space aboard the vessel.
That extra control can reduce exposure to carrier detention charges, support long-term storage at the destination and simplify project shipments to remote locations. However, ownership also transfers important responsibilities to the shipper. The container must remain structurally safe, properly examined, accurately weighed and correctly declared throughout its international journey.

What Is a Shipper’s Own Container?
A shipper’s own container is an intermodal freight container supplied by the cargo-owning business, exporter, importer, freight forwarder or another party outside the ocean carrier’s equipment fleet. The shipping line transports the SOC but does not normally own it.
By contrast, a carrier-owned container, or COC, belongs to or is leased by the shipping line. The carrier releases it to the shipper for packing and expects the empty container to be returned within the agreed free time.

When Does Using an SOC Make Commercial Sense?
An SOC often works best when the destination lacks a convenient empty-container return depot or when the consignee needs the container for an extended period. Project cargo, construction materials, engineering equipment, aid supplies and shipments to mines, energy sites or remote industrial locations frequently fall into this category.
Ownership can also suit regular exporters that want consistent equipment specifications. A shipper may choose containers with particular door arrangements, internal fittings, ventilation, height, or security features rather than accepting whichever carrier unit is available.

CSC Plates and the Owner’s Safety Responsibilities
The International Convention for Safe Containers 1972, known as CSC 1972, establishes internationally recognised safety requirements for most freight containers used in international surface transport. The International Maritime Organisation states that approved containers receive a Safety Approval Plate containing relevant technical information. It also makes the container owner responsible for subsequent maintenance and periodic examination. See the IMO’s official CSC Convention overview.
A CSC plate should not be treated as a blanket guarantee that a container remains fit for shipment. The plate records the container’s approval and technical limits, while the examination scheme and the unit’s current physical condition determine whether the unit remains safe to operate. Serious corrosion, cracked welds, damaged corner castings, distorted structural rails, defective doors or an unsafe floor may still prevent acceptance.
Under the CSC examination framework, a new container’s first examination must take place no later than five years after manufacture. Subsequent examinations must occur at intervals of no more than 30 months. Owners may use either a Periodic Examination Scheme, usually identified by a next examination date, or an Approved Continuous Examination Programme identified by an ACEP marking. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive explains that both ACEP and PES examinations must assess safety and suitability. Its guidance lists corrosion, welding, fastening, mechanical damage, structural components, and CSC plate validity as matters a competent examiner should inspect. Verified Gross Mass for an SOC
Using your own container does not remove the Verified Gross Mass requirement. Under SOLAS regulation VI/2, the shipper named on the bill of lading, sea waybill or equivalent transport document remains responsible for obtaining and communicating the VGM of the packed container.
The IMO states that the VGM must be provided to the vessel master or their representative and the terminal representative early enough to prepare the ship’s stowage plan. A packed container without an available VGM must not be loaded unless the required mass is obtained through an agreed contingency arrangement. See the IMO’s official VGM guidance.

UK Customs Procedures for Shipper-Owned Containers
The cargo and the container require separate consideration. Owning the container does not alter the need to classify, value and declare the goods carried inside it. The importer may need a GB EORI number, suitable customs software or an appointed customs agent before making an import declaration. GOV.UK confirms that businesses importing into England, Scotland or Wales generally need an EORI number beginning with GB. See the official UK import clearance process.
Temporary Admission and the container itself
HMRC states that freight containers entering the UK carrying goods are subject to Temporary Admission rules. Temporary Admission may allow qualifying goods or equipment to enter without immediate Customs Duty or import VAT where the conditions are met, and the items will be re-exported. In most cases, GOV. The UK states that Temporary Admission can permit goods to remain for up to 24 months, although the applicable period and conditions depend on the goods and the procedure used.
Reusable packaging requires a customs declaration. GOV.UK explains that eligible reusable packaging may, at suitable locations and in qualifying circumstances, be declared orally or by conduct. It may also be declared for Temporary Admission where it is intended for re-export. Businesses should confirm whether the particular SOC movement meets the definition and conditions rather than assuming every container automatically qualifies. Where the container is being sold, permanently imported or retained in the UK rather than re-exported, a different customs and tax treatment may apply. The purchase contract, invoice, ownership transfer, intended use and customs value should therefore make the commercial position clear.
Safety and security declarations
An Entry Summary Declaration, commonly called an ENS, is separate from the main import declaration. It supplies advance safety and security data to the border authority. GOV.UK requires the declaration to be accurate and complete and identifies affected shipments using information such as container and transport document numbers.

Export declarations
The exporter or appointed representative must obtain customs clearance before goods leave the UK. Submission deadlines depend on the route and mode. GOV.UK states that containerised sea cargo moving to certain listed nearby destinations must generally be declared at least two hours before departure, while other containerised sea cargo must generally be declared at least 24 hours before loading onto the vessel. Buying an SOC for International Shipping
Start by telling the supplier that the container will carry cargo for international shipment. A unit sold for static storage may be wind and watertight but still lack a suitable CSC examination status, acceptable identification or the structural condition required by the shipping line.
Ask for clear photographs of the CSC plate, examination markings, container number, corner castings, roof, understructure, doors and floor. Where the shipment carries heavy, concentrated or unusual loads, obtain professional packing and engineering advice rather than relying solely on the container’s nominal payload.
Before paying for haulage to the port, send the container details to the freight forwarder or shipping line. Confirm acceptance, documentation, terminal restrictions, VGM cut-off, seal requirements and any SOC surcharge in writing. A rejected container at the quay can create storage, lifting, transport and rebooking costs that quickly outweigh the original saving.
Regulations, carrier procedures and customs systems change. Check the current official guidance and obtain advice from your freight forwarder, customs representative or competent container examiner before arranging a live shipment.

What does SOC mean in shipping?
SOC means shipper’s own container or shipper-owned container. It describes a freight container supplied by the shipper, consignee, cargo owner or freight forwarder rather than by the ocean carrier.
Does an SOC need a CSC plate?
A freight container used under the CSC Convention for international transport must hold the appropriate safety approval. The owner must also maintain it and arrange examinations under an approved PES or ACEP system. A plate alone does not make a damaged or overdue container acceptable.
How often must a shipping container be examined?
Under the CSC framework, the first examination of a new container must take place within five years of manufacture. Subsequent examinations must occur at intervals of no more than 30 months. Containers may operate under either a Periodic Examination Scheme or an Approved Continuous Examination Programme.
Who is responsible for the VGM of an SOC?
The shipper named on the bill of lading, sea waybill or equivalent transport document is responsible for obtaining and submitting the Verified Gross Mass. Container ownership does not transfer that SOLAS responsibility to the shipping line.
Can an SOC be loaded without a VGM?
A packed container cannot be loaded onto a SOLAS-regulated ship unless its VGM has been made available to the terminal and vessel representatives. The terminal may sometimes obtain the weight on the shipper’s behalf under an agreed contingency process, usually at the shipper’s cost.
Does an SOC avoid every demurrage and detention charge?
No. An SOC can avoid charges linked specifically to keeping a carrier-owned container beyond its free time. Port storage, quay rent, terminal handling, customs delays, haulage waiting time and other operational charges may still apply.
Does the container need its own customs declaration?
The answer depends on the movement, ownership, intended use and customs procedure. HMRC states that freight containers entering the UK carrying goods are subject to Temporary Admission rules, while eligible reusable packaging may qualify for simplified declaration methods. A permanently imported or sold container may require different treatment.
Can I ship a wind and watertight storage container overseas?
Not automatically. Wind and watertight describes a storage condition, not international transport approval. Before booking, confirm the container’s CSC status, examination marking, structural condition, identification and acceptance by the chosen shipping line.
Should I obtain carrier approval before buying an SOC?
Yes. Ask the shipping line or freight forwarder to confirm its SOC acceptance process, required photographs, container details, VGM procedure, route restrictions and additional charges before committing to the shipment.
